Offshore wind will play an increasingly greater role in the production of sustainable energy and this is a wonderful development for the Northern Netherlands. It is also the start signal for NNOW – Northern Netherlands Offshore Wind.
By 2020, 20% of energy generation in the Netherlands has to be sustainable and the long-term ambition is for wind energy to generate 6,000 MW. That puts the sector on the eve of a whirlwind development; it offers opportunities for the approximately 150 companies in the Netherlands that are active in and around offshore wind. Companies that excel in foundations, installation, logistics or maintenance. A significant part of these companies is based in the Northern Netherlands and in the province of Noord-Holland.
In conjunction with the logistics opportunities in Eemshaven and the port of Harlingen, it is hard to conceive of a better location or base. No wonder that the NOM, Energy Valley and NHN have taken the initiative to set up Northern Netherlands Offshore Wind, or NNOW for short. NNOW supports a cluster of companies, establishing a strong national and international position in the world of offshore wind.
A solid start with NNOW
The network is open to any company in the region that is or would like to be active in offshore wind. Besides networking, knowledge exchange and the joint implementation of promotion and acquisition activities, the cluster also pays ample attention to R&D and business development and to training adequately qualified personnel.
NNOW will enter into alliances with other parties to accelerate the development. At the moment, approximately 80 companies are involved with NNOW, which has created a powerful impulse for more activity in relation to offshore wind in the Northern Netherlands.
